How to Talk to Your Child About God’s Love

As a parent, you’re sharing God’s love with your child. Showering her with hugs and kisses, lending an ear, providing thoughtful words, praying with her, and teaching her right from wrong are acts of God. To keep it up, Orange County Catholic schools has a list of fun ideas and hands-on projects that you can do with your child to continue bringing the message of God’s love into your home.

Bible Verses
The best place to start teaching your child God’s love is with the Scripture. Here is a list of Bible verses your child should write down and learn, either in a journal or on flashcards.

  • Psalm 36:8: How precious is your mercy, O God! The children of Adam take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

  • 1 John 4:7-8: Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love.

  • Matthew 19: 13-15: Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked them, but Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” After he placed his hands on them, he went away.

Love Mirror
This fun and colorful craft consists of a heart-shaped box and a small mirror, which can be purchased in different shapes and sizes at any craft store. Secure the mirror inside of the heart-shaped box. Ask your child, “Who does God love?” Have her take the lid of the box to see her reflection in God’s eyes. It will certainly make her smile!

Measure God’s Love
This activity encourages your child to measure the depth of God’s love. Begin by giving your child a pen, ruler, and a blank card. The card will consist of a list of things your child will measure. On the card, ask questions like:

  1. How thick is the Bible?

  2. How long is your shoe?

  3. How tall are you?

  4. How long does it take to jump 20 times?

  5. How tall are the children’s chairs?

  6. How big is a globe?

Once she answers the questions, have her look up Ephesians 3:17-19, which reads: “Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” Your child will learn God’s love is infinite and cannot be measured!
